Angry Sisters: Rev. Gina Perez & Dorothee Sölle, 2026

Narra wood
2 pieces, each
28 × 28 × 8 cm

This work consists of two sculptural wooden forms, each carved from Narra wood and shaped into a triangular structure. Each piece references a different figure: the Philippine Rev. Gina Perez of the Aglipay Church and the German theologian Dorothee Sölle. Selected quotes by both are laser engraved into the surface of the wood.

The triangular form operates as a structural device: three points suggest opposing vectors of force that converge toward the center. The work proposes anger not as an uncontrolled outburst but as a concentrated and directed energy.

The choice of Narra wood is central to the work. Narra is a dense Philippine hardwood with a distinct grain pattern and high durability. It is commonly used for furniture, but also for Arnis sticks which are weapons used in Filipino martial arts that require strength, impact resistance, and control.

The wood used for the sculptures was sourced from a tree that had fallen during a storm in La Union, Philippines. It was initially processed there, further worked on in Anilao, and later developed during the artist’s residency at Project Space Pilipinas, Lucban. The final pieces are exhibited in Laguna, Philippines.

The work brings together material, text, and form, situating the engraved voices within a physically resistant medium and framing anger as a disciplined and embodied force.
