Burning Letters, 2025

Participatory work
Burnt paper, ashes from collective ritual
dimensions variable

Burning Letters is a participatory, process-based work initiated in 2025. Participants from different parts of the world were invited to take part in a private writing and burning ritual during the days at the end of the year. Through the act of writing and naming what is ready to be released, personal gestures were transformed into material traces. The resulting ashes, collected from multiple sources, form the material basis of the work.

The ritual is inspired by the Rauhnächte, a period in Central European traditions understood as a time between endings and beginnings, as well as by ritual thinking in the Philippines. The work combines these references through the artist’s own interpretative framework, merging writing, release, and transformation. While each contribution remains individual, all gestures are connected through the shared structure of the ritual. The collected ashes represent only one phase of the work and will be transformed into a subsequent artwork over the following year, positioning Burning Letters as an open and evolving process.
