Urban Prayers is an ongoing series initiated in 2021, consisting of hand-engraved mirrors. The engraved texts visually recall medieval prayer verses, yet their sources range from biblical quotations to profane materials such as song lyrics and everyday language. Through this juxtaposition, the series examines contemporary spirituality and the persistence of ritual language within secular, urban life.

The series developed in close relation to the artist’s academic engagement with theology and religious studies, particularly the writings of Meister Eckhart and the Beguine tradition, including Marguerite Porete. Eckhart’s concept of the divine as present in all things informs the work’s framework. The use of the typeface Fraktura references medieval manuscript culture and the practice of hand-copying texts in monastic scriptoria, where sacred and profane writings coexisted as exercises. The slow, repetitive act of engraving functions here as a meditative process.

As reflective surfaces, the mirrors confront viewers with their own image while reading the text, creating a moment of self-observation between inner contemplation and external language. Since 2024, the series has expanded to include texts in Tagalog, reflecting the artist’s engagement with her German-Philippine identity. Urban Prayers has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions.
