Daughters of Zelophehad, 2019
Acrylic and decorative gold on canvas
170 × 190 cm
Daughters of Zelophehad references the biblical story of the daughters of Zelophehad from the Old Testament, a narrative frequently cited in feminist theology as an early assertion of women’s agency and inheritance rights. The work engages questions of value, visibility, and justice.
The application of gold draws on ritual experiences, including Buddhist traditions in which gold is applied after prayer as an act of devotion rather than authorship. During its presentation in the group exhibition Ésskizziert at Kitchen Guerilla, Hamburg-Altona, the painting was completed live over two days. The process allowed visitors to witness and partially participate in the gilding, transforming the work into a collective and performative act situated between painting, ritual, and shared gesture.
